Employment Law Workshops and Seminars
The Employment Department have held a number of client workshops and seminars including answering the top 10 employment law questions from HR professionals, explaining how to deal with grievances and how to conduct a disciplinary process. As feedback was so positive, the Employment Department plans to hold further workshops and seminars in 2008 on similar topics.

Workline
A confidential employment advice helpline is available for workers in the UK film and television industries. The Workline service is run by staff with HR experience gained within those industries, and co-ordinated by our employment team here at Goodman Derrick LLP. Advice covers the full gamut of work-related queries, including contract issues, maternity and paternity leave and pay, flexible working hours, disciplinary and dismissal procedures, and pensions. Events
On 29th January this year, the Employment Department welcomed clients and guests to their newly refurbished offices for an evening of indulgence and extravagance – a ‘Champagne and Chocolate tasting’ evening. Guests sampled some of the finest origin chocolate available in the UK made by leading chocolatiers such as Amedei and Valrhona. Martin Christy, founder of the Academy of Chocolate in the UK and World Chocolate Award Jury Member, introduced the different chocolates and described the different aromas, tastes and textures whilst demonstrating how best way to taste Champagne and chocolate together. Martin further explained how champagne and chocolate can best compliment each other. Clients and guests were also invited to enter a competition with the chance to win a bottle of fine champagne and a goodie bag of exclusive chocolates.

Previously, the Employment Department hosted a “Well Being Evening” at the AVEDA salon on High Holborn. Clients and guests enjoyed an evening of indulgence where they sampled treatments such as stress relieving back massages, mini manicures and eyebrow shaping. Hair- styling and make up consultations were also available as well as access to an image consultant and Pilates specialist. Guests were also treated to drinks and canapés plus a goody bag containing AVEDA vouchers and products.

However, on 15 December 2007, further legislation was introduced by way of the Money Laundering Regulations 2007 (“the Regulations”).  They are designed to identify and prevent money laundering and terrorist financing by requiring those persons involved in businesses in which money laundering may occur, to take various actions, including checking the identity of their customers and reporting suspicious activity.  Read more about the subject here.

  • Recruitment Industry Update: Agency workers found to be employees of employment business - On 18 May 2007, the EAT held in the case of Consistent Group Ltd v Kalwak and ors and Welsh Country Foods Ltd, that agency workers were employed by the employment business, regardless of the fact that it was the end user who exercised control over the actual day to day operation of the work.   Read more about this matter in this newsletter.
